Why Do I Sweat So Much At Night?

By Karen V. Douglas

Sweat is something all of us naturally do daily. Sweating is an important function which helps our bodies maintain the proper internal temperature and while were awake, we may sweat for any number of reasons. However, when we sweat profusely while sleeping for no apparent reason, this is not normal and can be a problem. It might not lead to the embarrassment in public that excessive sweating during the day may cause, but sleep hyperhidrosis, as the condition is known causes enough discomfort by itself.

Many people with this condition sweat so heavily that they cant sleep. Awaking drenched in sweat, they may have to change their pajamas and their sheets; in severe cases, even the mattress may become damp with sweat. If this is a nightly occurrence, it can cause sleep disturbances and general distress over whether this may be a symptom of a deeper problem.

There are in fact conditions which may cause excessive sweating while youre asleep: fever due to an illness is one. Diabetics often suffer from night sweating, as do people with epilepsy and those recovering from head injuries. If your sweating is an infrequent occurrence, its probably nothing to worry about " but if its a nightly event which has no apparent cause, then youre likely suffering from sleep hyperhidrosis.

If you share your bed with someone else, then your sleep hyperhidrosis may be an embarrassment as well as causing you discomfort and loss of sleep. You may want to hide it from your partner, but this can be hard to do, especially when they awake covered with your sweat!

This is an expensive procedure (which is considered to be an elective one by most insurers and not covered), it sometimes fails to resolve the problem and there is always a risk of complications with surgery, however small. If there are alternatives you havent yet given a chance, surgery is not the answer.

There are some treatments available for sleep hyperhidrosis, although they tend to be both invasive and expensive. There are laser treatments you can have and botox injections have been effective for some sufferers. There is even a surgical procedure which may be able to cure your sleep hyperhidrosis.

Instead of going through nasty medical treatments for your sleep hyperhidrosis, it's a better idea to go with other treatment options. There are natural treatments that you can use that are inexpensive and painless. Simple things often can help you out, such as wearing cool and loose clothing and choosing your diet carefully.

Rather than resorting to something as invasive as surgery for sleep hyperhidrosis, try all of your other options first. There are inexpensive, painless natural treatments you can try which are often every bit as effective as the more expensive options. You can also try some very simple measures like changing your diet.
