Knowing the Dangers of Carbon Monoxide

By Melanie Martin

Carbon Monoxide is one of the most deadly "silent killer" gases known to man which had caused many deaths to people who were exposed to this kind of gas. In fact, death toll due to carbon monoxide poisoning or suffocation is high every year due to negligence and lack of information dissemination to users about the danger and risks of being exposed to carbon monoxide.

It is important to note that large amounts of carbon monoxide when inhaled will surely cause fatal damages to the vital organs of the body where the carbon monoxide reacts with the hemoglobin in red blood cells forming carboxyhemoglobin. This reaction will then easily dislodge the levels of oxygen which can cause serious internal damages in the brain, heart and lungs by destroying its cells.

Due to this, the symptom and poisoning will be very hard to diagnose because the damaged caused by the carbon monoxide cannot be fully determined. The victim will not feel it right away but the percentage of damage done to the internal organs will be felt gradually. Unusual discomforts will be felt like headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, chest tightness and pains, muscles weakness and fatigue. For those who breathed-in a greater amount carbon monoxide will experience loss of consciousness and could even lead to instant death.

Other factors of carbon monoxide poisoning are taken from incomplete burning of natural gas and carbon-related gas like propane, gasoline, coal, wood, defective ventilation, heater, gas appliances, car smoke, etc. This will cause possible poisoning to the ones who are affected and even instant death due to suffocation. Long effect can be very dangerous because it will destroy the body organs in our body and the result can be fatal if not given immediate attention.

These are only some of the things that should not be neglected because it is always used inside the household so once they malfunction you will easily breath in the carbon monoxide that will cause damage to your body.Breathing in the smokers smoke and a cars fume is a very unpleasant experience because it will also damage your lungs.

The danger is not only high at home but also in working areas like factories and other manufacturing areas where burning materials are being used to create certain products. When this happens, never take things for granted through self medication because only the doctor knows what medicine is best for you.

Lastly, BBB advices homeowners to always keep vigilance on the appliances at home by looking for the right persons to be consulted with regard to possible leakages in your appliances and other machinery. This is so they can make plumbing checks. One of the most dangerous causes of poisoning is when there are leaks like that on gas tanks because you wont even detect what caused your body to deteriorate that fast so it is always a positive move to be vigilant about the little things we have at home and even in the office to avoid these unwarranted happenings.
