Smoking is bad for the health for it will cause a lot of illnesses in the long run. Deciding to quit smoking will reduce your risk of dying from heart and lung diseases, cancer and stroke. Here are some tips to help you quit smoking.

Before you completely quit smoking, you must first condition yourself physically. You can do this by stating a simple exercise program, drinking a lot of fluids and taking a lot of rest. It is also necessary to condition your mind about quitting. This can be done by making a list of all the negative effects of smoking and your reasons of quitting. Choose one reason each night before going to bed every night and repeat it ten times.

Next, it is best for you to know what to expect. Once you quit smoking, you ought to be aware that you will be feeling withdrawal symptoms. Keep in mind that these symptoms are temporary and will only last for one to two weeks. It is best for you to know that most relapse occurs during the first week after you quit smoking. You must then realize that this will be your most difficult time. Try to gather all your will power, determination and seek support from your family and friends.

Involve someone else. If your spouse is also a smoker, ask him/her to quit with you. Together, you can overcome the addiction to smoking. You can also involve your friend by playing a bet that you can quit smoking on the quitting day you have set and the days after that.

Avoid temptations. If you usually smoke after meals, then after eating, get up from the table and brush your teeth or take a walk. This will take your thoughts away from smoking. For the first one to three weeks after quitting, avoid situations that can be associated with the pleasure of smoking such as watching your favorite TV program or sitting on your favorite chair. If you are still working with your capability to restrain yourself from smoking, limit your socializing to healthful activities or situations where smoking is not allowed. Also, if you should be in a certain situation wherein you can be tempted to smoke, such as cocktail or dinner party, try to mingle with the nonsmoker guests there.

By following these simple tips, you will be able to overcome smoking in a much easier way. Also, keep in mind that quitting smoking is not only good for the first try. If you fail on your first attempt to quit, then try again.
