Reasons People Might Have Difficulty Swallowing

Having difficulty swallowing can be very frustrating for the sufferer. There are several causes for this condition. They range from accidental to those related to disease. Being unable to swallow can be a chronic or a temporary condition.

The most common experienced by people is that of the common cold. Most of us have have had a sore throat that kept us from swallowing well. We have also had our throats filled with phlegm that impedes swallowing. None of these are comfortable feelings.

Panic attacks can manifest themselves in the throat becoming restricted. The throat can become swelled and hinder the swallowing action. It also can trigger hyperactive breathing that can cause swallowing to be almost impossible.

A person may also lose the ability to swallow easily from an injury to the throat. It could be caused be a traumatic blow. It can also be result of a sever cut. Sometimes these conditions will heal and sometimes they will not. Scar tissue may remain that impedes swallowing.

The term for suddenly being unable to swallow because of the epiglottis being pushed down by a foreign object is called choking. In order to swallow or breathe again the foreign object which is usually food must be expelled. This can be done using the Heimlich maneuver.

Disease can cause chronic swallowing problems. A disease that can cause challenges in swallowing is cancer. Cancer may result in the removal of areas that are a part of swallowing like the throat and esophagus. Thyroid cancer can also impede swallowing. If the ability to swallow is lost the sufferer will have to get nutrients in an alternative manner.

Another conditions that can cause swelling to the throat area is allergies. For minor reactions medicines can be used to prevent or treat them. Severe reactions require a trip to the hospital. Some people have life threatening allergic reactions. Any loss of this ability can be disconcerting.

Eating foods that one is allergic to can also create this type of attack. This can also be caused by a bee sting. A severe reaction to things like pollen can cause throat restriction.

Difficulty swallowing can be frustrating challenge. This condition can be ongoing or temporary. They are often related to problems with breathing.
