The 3 Most Common Types Of Mood Disorders

By Ben Paul

Bipolar disorder is a very serious disease that can affect both adolescents and adults alike. To say that this disease is very complicated is putting in mildly; it has many and different ranges of emotions that can make the sufferer feel high one minute and low the next minute. If you feel good about yourself and believe that you can do almost anything, but suddenly you feel sad and helpless within minutes, chances are high that you may be suffering from bipolar disorder.

Bipolar Disorder is a kind of mood disorder that is affecting 1 in every 83 people in America. This condition is often manifested by elation of good mood one minute, and having depressive moods the next. The shift is fast and sometimes unnoticeable by the person affected. Most people affected with this type of disorder are those who have had depression in the past. This can also result from anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs prescribed to you in the past.

Bipolar disorders are of three types: first is type 1 bipolar disorder, and the next is known as bipolar disorder type II. The other form of this condition is referred to as Rapid Cycling Bipolar Disorder. Type 1 is mostly recognized by mood switches from happiness to sadness; it is popularly known as manic-depressive disorder. Type II in most part is typified by hyped emotions followed by extreme depression or unhappiness, while rapid cycling bipolar disorder means when manic depression occurs continuously for extended period of time, mostly for 12 months or longer.

Bipolar disorders are disease that can arise from almost nowhere or from a history of certain previous conditions. However, most people who suffer from any type of bipolar are individuals who have history of drug addiction, history of depression or those who have inherited family history of bipolar. Bipolar can affect both children and adults alike; children with these conditions are often diagnosed or referred to as having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There has been a situation where such condition is believed to have arisen as a result of environmental factors.

The treatment of Bipolar Disorder is more aggressive compared to other mental disorders. This treatment includes psychotherapy where you and your psychotherapist will build a trust - relationship. Your psychotherapist will interview you regarding all aspects of your life, including past experiences and your point of view of today. This type of therapy encourages the patient to become open. Another treatment is through adequate sleep and prescription drugs like mood stabilizers. If your condition is drug related, more often than not, you will be put in an institution for observations in addition to other proper management regimen.

Good news about bipolar disorder is that it can be properly managed, and even more importantly, it is curable. Excellent and sustained regimen of psychotherapy and usage of the right anti-depressants or mood stabilizing drugs will help tremendously in treatment of bipolar. Family understanding and encouragement coupled with metal and physical treatment as described above will go a long way in complete cure of this disease.
