Maurice Jardin was diagnosed with the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma in June this year. Mr Jardin has since been campaigning about the dangers of coming into contact with asbestos. Sixty Four year old Mr Jardin was due to retire when he received the news of his diagnosis. He has now started campaigning to highlight the danger asbestos poses and is also contacting his old work colleagues to inform them of the risk.
Mr Jardin was awarded a six figure sum in compensation although he has stated that the money will be going towards the cost of his treatment. Mr Jardin has declared, "I'd give everything back just to be normal," he said about the compensation payout, adding that he just wanted people to truly recognise the danger of asbestos "I'd heard of it, but I was not aware of how bad it was."
Mr Jardin was diagnosed with the disease in June this year after he began suffering from pains in his side. The news of the disease came as a shock to him as he had only just retired having never taken a day off work sick in hi8s life.
His doctor consulted with a lawyer and pretty soon it was discovered that the cause of the disease was hi working in a factory which had an asbestos roof. In the 1990's the roof was replaced and the work took three weeks to complete. Mr Jardin was made to stand underneath to make sure other staff members did not enter. Part of the roof caved in and landed on the floor which then resulted in Mr Jardin having to clean it up and becoming covered in dust containing asbestos.
Because of the the dust on his clothing Mr Jardin's wife and daughter were also tested for mesothelioma as they had potentially come into contact with the dust too.
