How Does Tinnitus Restraining Therapy Works?

By Timothy Tylor

One of the ear problems that you can possibly experience is the tinnitus. Perhaps, you know people who complain about the annoying sound in their ears. This ear problem is manifested by a ringing or buzzing sound. The damage commonly affects the inner ear and it is challenging to treat the condition. Even many ear specialists find it hard to determine the cause that is why up to this writing there is no evident treatment or medication for tinnitus. Fortunately, a new technology was invented known as tinnitus restraining therapy. It is an alternative procedure for tinnitus as drugs are not effective.

The tinnitus retraining therapy was introduced in 1980's by Dr. Pawel Jastreboff. Thorough research was made to discover the various tone and pitches. Doing the research had lead to developing treatments according to different noise levels. He also found out that some people with tinnitus are not bothered about the noise while others get used of the sound. This means that there is no difference on the volume of the noise, rather on the perception of the individual about the noise.

In addition, the tinnitus restraining therapy aims to know how the sensory motor gets the different levels of information. Ideally, the information is perceived by the cerebral cortex as it passes through the nervous system. However, some patients are not able to detect the noise. This made difficult for the procedure to correct the ear problem.

Tinnitus retraining therapy is a sort of habituation. It encourages eliminating the negative psychological effects regarding to the tinnitus sounds. Another thing is that it improves the ability of the patient to recognize the noise during the treatment. Otherwise, if the patient is not able to detect the sound, probably he or she cannot actively retain the treatment.

The therapy treatment usually lasts for two years that requires the patient to use noise transmitting device in the ear. The device transmits low broadband noise because too much silence can worsen tinnitus. In this way, the patient will not be annoyed by the sensation sound. Thus, negative emotions associated to tinnitus will be reduced.

Medical evaluation is conducted before undergoing the tinnitus restraining therapy. It is performed by an audiologist in order to determine the habituation procedure. Performing different tests is necessary to come up with the right procedure of the therapy.
